Ecuadorians are preparing today to enjoy Carnival 2025 with a holiday from March 1 to 4, dates in which there will be a wide festive agenda, Carnival in Ecuador is one of the most anticipated festivities of the year, an event full of color, music and tradition that attracts thousands of national and international tourists.
During the month of March, various regions of the country dress up to celebrate with parades, dances, water games and a varied gastronomy that delights visitors.
In Quito, some five thousand municipal police officers will be deployed, together with members of the Armed Forces and the National Police, to guarantee tranquility during 39 public and private events, according to Carolina Andrade, Secretary of Security of the capital city.
Carnival Festivities in Ecuador
Among the activities planned in the city there are parades and concerts for the enjoyment of more than 90 thousand people, a figure similar to that of 2024, when the holiday left 12.4 million dollars in sales for tourist establishments.
Every corner of the country offers a unique experience during Carnival. In Ambato, the famous Fiesta de la Fruta y de las Flores is celebrated, a festival that stands out for its elegant parade with floats adorned with flowers and fruit, in addition to artistic presentations and cultural events.
In Guaranda, the Carnival is lived with intensity to the rhythm of songs and the traditional chicha de jora, an ancestral drink. In this city, visitors can enjoy parades, live music and the characteristic game with water, foam and talcum powder.
Another unmissable destination is Esmeraldas, where the celebration merges with Afro-Ecuadorian culture through its dances, marimbas and exquisite cuisine based on seafood and coconut.
The carnival is celebrated all over the world, but the Quiteño carnival has its own characteristics, with local traditions, said the Secretary of Culture of the municipality, Jorge Cisneros.
Floats, chivas quiteñas, town bands, characters with illuminated costumes, stilt walkers and giant light structures, will cross part of the north of the city next Monday until arriving at the park El Arbolito where there will be a concert.
In other localities there will also be celebrations, for example, in Ambato, province of Tungurahua, will take place the traditional Festival of the Fruit and Flowers, declared Intangible Cultural Heritage of Ecuador.
All these celebrations are also an economic engine for producers, traders and entrepreneurs.
One of the most characteristic aspects of the Ecuadorian Carnival is the play with water, foam and colored powder. However, in recent years there have been campaigns to celebrate in a more responsible way, promoting cultural and artistic activities as alternatives for the entertainment of tourists and locals.
Accommodation is a key factor for those planning to travel during this season, as many cities receive a large influx of visitors. It is recommended to book in advance to ensure availability in hotels and lodging, especially in popular tourist destinations.
Ecuadorian gastronomy is also a protagonist on this date, offering a wide variety of typical dishes. Among the most representative delicacies of Carnival are roasted guinea pig, hornado, empanadas and fanesca, a traditional dish that begins to be tasted during this season, in anticipation of Easter.
For those who wish to enjoy this festival to the fullest, it is advisable to plan your travel itinerary in advance, wear comfortable clothes, protect yourself from the sun and respect the customs of each locality. Ecuador offers a perfect combination of culture, fun and tradition during Carnival, making it an unforgettable experience for national and international tourists.
With its geographic and cultural diversity, Ecuador offers multiple options to experience Carnival in a unique way in each destination. Whether enjoying parades, live music, water games or exploring the exquisite cuisine, this festival represents an excellent opportunity to learn more about the country and its people in an atmosphere of joy and celebration.
Recommendations to Enjoy Carnival
If you plan to travel to Ecuador to experience this festivity, it is important that you take into account some recommendations. First of all, book your accommodation in advance, since hotel demand increases on these dates. It is also advisable to wear comfortable clothes and be prepared to get wet, since in many places water games are an unavoidable tradition.
It is also essential to respect local customs and enjoy the Carnival responsibly. If you are looking for a more cultural experience, Ambato is the best option, while if you prefer a more festive celebration, Guaranda and Esmeraldas offer vibrant events.

Carnival is a perfect opportunity to get to know Ecuador through its gastronomy. At this time, it is common to enjoy traditional dishes such as hornado, fritada, tamales and fanesca, a thick soup prepared with grains and dried fish.
